This week in cycling history…
- Christine Thorburn, a former U.S. rider, celebrated her birthday on 17 September. She was the U.S. individual time trial champion in 2004 and participated at two Olympic Games, only narrowly missing out on a podium place. She was also as part of the Worlds bronze medal team time trial squad in Salzburg in 2006. After retiring from the sport, she studied medicine at Stanford and went on to become a rheumatologist.
- Monica Valvik turned 50 on 15 September. She is a former five-time Norwegian national road champion and winner of the 1994 UCI Road World Championship gold medal, giving her country the first ever word title in a road event.
