  • Anna van der Breggen and Chantal van den Broek-Blaak have extended their contracts with Boels-Dolmans. Van der Breggen will continue to ride until the end of 2021. In the three years that follow, she will take on the role with the team as a sports director and coach. Van den Broek-Blaak will be riding for the team until the Spring of 2022, and will then also join the team as sports director until the end of 2024.
  • The UCI has released its newly reshuffled calendar for the 2020 Mountain Bike World Cup and World Championship events. Originally scheduled to be held in Albstadt, Germany, the Cross-country Worlds will now be held alongside the Downhill Worlds in Leogang, Austria, from 5-11 October. The World Cup series is scheduled to run from September, starting with the Lenzerheide World Cup in Switzerland, through to the beginning of November with the last event in Lousa, Portugal.
  • The Dutch National Road Championships will not be rescheduled for this year, so Lorena Wiebes will wear the Dutch champion’s jersey for another year. Plans are still underway to find a 2020 replacement date for the TT Championships.
  • The organisers of the Leadville Race Series that includes the Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike event, which draws thousands of international and national participants each year, have cancelled all of their events this summer due to the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The Belgian road championships will not be able to take place in August as scheduled by the UCI, as the government will not allow mass gatherings by that point. A new date of 22 September has been announced and the event will take place in Anzegem. Italy and France are also looking to postpone their national championships until later in the year.
  • Vårgårda CK has decided to cancel its WorldTour races in Sweden, citing that it would not be safe to run such events during the coronavirus pandemic.

This week in cycling history…

  • English rider Beryl Burton, born 12 May 1937, dominated women’s cycling, winning more than 90 domestic championships and seven world titles and setting a series of impressive records. Born in West Yorkshire, she suffered rheumatic fever during childhood and only took up riding after having been introduced to the sport by her husband. She rejected offers of sponsorship and remained an amateur, working on a rhubarb farm during most of her cycling years. She was formidable in the time trial, and almost unbeatable on the domestic circuit. In order to honour her amazing achievements, she was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire and Officer of the Order of the British Empire. She was also awarded the UK cycling’s top accolade, the Bidlake Memorial Prize, three times.
