World Bicycle Day

This Friday is World Bicycle Day, a UN endorsed ‘celebration of the bicycle’ and a day celebrated in over 80 countries around the world.

As cyclists and fans of the sport, we all appreciate the joy of riding a bike or watching a race. The bicycle provides a sense of freedom and empowerment but it is also a catalyst for economic development and gender equality. From bringing diverse economic opportunities to women, the bicycle has facilitated progress for many women in particular poorer nations. In many parts of the world having access to a bike can be life changing such as enabling young girls to be able to go to school or empower women to ride to work and become more independent

Riding a bike serves different purposes: riding a bike can be a profession, used as a form of entertainment, means of affordable transport and physical and mental health and much more and above all riding a bicycle is good for the environment. World Bicycle Day draws attention to all these benefits and recognises the vital importance of the bicycle, its versatility and uniqueness as one of the most important inventions.

On World Bicycle Day, let’s celebrate the countless ways bicycles have improved our lives. What better way to celebrate this special day than by getting out there and riding your bike! Whether you are new to cycling or have been riding for years, there are plenty of ways to get involved on this day.

Have a happy World Bicycle Day!
