Vollering Misses Top Spot

The Dutch champion Demi Vollering sprinted to third place in Liege-Bastogne-Liège at the weekend. Despite it being a great result, Vollering concluded that she started her sprint too late and had to make peace with third place. Vollering ends the spring with consistently good results, but is left without a win. “I’m disappointed. I had really good legs today, but gambled too much,” she admitted afterwards.

“When the breakaway got away, we kept our cool. The gap was big, but we got it closed, so it wasn’t too big. Femke Gerritse and Blanka Vas protected me for a whole day, Niamh Fisher-Black took over on La Redoute. Mischa Bredewold dropped back from the lead group to close the gap for Lotte Kopecky and me. They did a fantastic job. I would have loved to thank them with the win.”

“Anything could happen in the final kilometres, so I tried to stay sharp. Elisa Longo-Borghini was also alone, so I thought she would jump on everything. I started my sprint too late. I gambled too much and stayed in the wheels too long. That was a mistake. A mistake that hits hard because that’s how I missed out on the win when I had good legs. Do I have any regrets about my classic spring? Mostly about Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The Amstel Gold Race became a kind of criterium due to circumstances. La Flèche Wallonne was less tough than usual because some climbs disappeared in the new course. I felt good that day, but Kasia Niewiadoma was simply stronger on the Mur de Huy. Today I can only blame myself. I was in a position to win and messed up. It’s bummer and that feeling will linger for a while.”

“In the race I don’t think about pressure, you mainly feel it before. During the race everyone is nervous, which is normal and good. Now the realisation is there that I will be left empty-handed this spring. Also two years ago I didn’t win in the Ardennes week, last year I took the Triple. What happened this week gives me extra energy for the future. I’m only going to be hungrier heading into La Vuelta Femenina 24 by Carrefour.es.”
