2023 was an extremely successful season for Demi Vollering. With final victory in the Tour de Romandie, the reigning Dutch champion has added another prestigious race to her impressive list of achievements in 2023. That list includes, among others, Strade Bianche and the Ardennes triple, as well as overall victory in the Vuelta a Burgos and, of course, the Tour de France Femmes. The time trial and road race at the European Championships in the Netherlands next week still await.
“The last stage of Tour de Romandie was a real battle!” Vollering admitted. “It was difficult to keep everything under control, but I am proud to add the this beautiful race to my palmares.”
Vollering’s success for Team SD Worx follows last year’s win in the final classification of the Swiss WorldTour stage race by Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio. Teammate Marlen Reusser took third place overall.
“With my stage win on Saturday, half the work was done, but I knew we still had a very tricky final day ahead of us,” Demi Vollering said. “We had created the ideal scenario, because we had three riders in the breakaway at the beginning. This allowed us to take a wait-and-see approach and save strength for the finale. This was a stage where many riders could do well. So we had to keep an eye on a lot of girls. It was important to stay alert, yet it was not always easy to decide which attack we reacted to and which we did not. But the team did an excellent job. I am tired but satisfied as we successfully defended the yellow jersey.”
“It is always special to win an overall classification,” said Vollering. “This win is also close to my heart because it is in Switzerland, where I live these days. I am proud to add such a great race to my palmares.” With that, Team SD Worx will end its WorldTour campaign just as it started back at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, with a victory.
