Just five weeks after suffering a collarbone fracture in training, Blanka Vas will resume cyclocross competition again in the upcoming X2O Trophy CX Kortrijk to be held in West Flanders on 25th November. The Hungarian champion is thus heading for another busy cyclocross winter.
Sport director Lars Boom is approaching the champion’s post-injury return without expectation. “I’m not expecting anything and that’s only realistic since she broke her collarbone a little over a month ago. Fortunately, she was able to undergo surgery immediately in Herentals the same evening. After that, she immediately started fanatically doing exercises for recovery, as well as core training. So she built up a lot of strength in her upper body to cope with the shocks.”
Vas successfully completed a two-hour cross-training session Wednesday. “In my opinion, she still has a very high level, but she naturally lacks rhythm. She has to find this back now. In Kortrijk she just has to get a feeling with cross again. It is a technical course. That should suit her. But we should not panic when Puck Pieterse and Fem van Empel ride away from her. She is just starting over and there are still a lot of crosses to come”, Boom concludes.
Team SD Worx Cyclocross programme:
Blanka Vas still rides about 13 cross races in total, including in December SP Boom, WC Flamanville, Namur, Gavere, SP Heusden-Zolder, Diegem and WC Hulst. Christine Majerus is also diving back into the field in Boom after a year’s absence. She may (subject to change) also ride Namen, Gavere and Diegem under reserve. Marie Schreiber will be in action on Sunday in the World Cup in Dublin. Then it’s on to Flamanville, Namur, Antwerp, Gavere, Heusden-Zolder, Diegem and Hulst.
