How it happened
The final race of the 2023 Women’s World Tour calendar took place over a 133.4km route finishing in Nanning. With a route taking in five ascents up the steep 11% gradient climb, there were a number of attacking opportunities for those who were looking for them. Despite this, after the first two ascents, the peloton remained intact.
On the third ascent a large group went clear, including riders from all the major teams. Behind them the peloton was all over the road, and with an unorganised chase the gap to the leaders quickly extended out to over two minutes. On the fourth climb a chase group formed, and shortly after, with around 40km to go, joined the breakaway. This group took the number of riders up the road to around twenty, and the attacks to whittle the group down came immediately.
Giada Borghesi (Human Powered Health) launched a move and was followed by Sandra Alonso (Ceratizit WNT). With both of them having two teammates in the breakaway group the cohesion to form a chase was limited, and although UAE Team ADQ had missed out, they didn’t have the power to bring the duo back. Borghesi and Alonso worked strongly together to extend their lead out to over two minutes, before setting up for a sprint finale. Borghesi was forced to lead out, but Alonso came off her wheel quite early and with pace. Borghesi was almost able to get back into the slipstream, but in the end Alonso was too strong, taking the win and making it four wins from four in China for Ceratizit WNT.
