Record Fourth Win For Wiebes

Lorena Wiebes of Team SD Worx has won the Tour of Drenthe for an impressive fourth time in a row. The finish took place on the VAM mountain, where Wiebes unleashed her sprint to seal her fourth win of the season, after a formidable lead-out from Christine Majerus. Taking the crown in Drenthe for the fourth successive year, makes her only record holder in the Dutch WorldTour classic. “This is one of my favourite races. The red carpet was rolled out by my team, so I had to finish it too!” Wiebes said triumphantly.

“I am proud of this record,” Wiebes added. “We had made clear agreements. I had indicated that I would like to win this race again. The team did everything possible to make it happen. There was nervousness in the peloton because of the wind, but in the end it caused less damage than previously thought. I barely rode at the back. You know that on VAM Mountain you always have to be at the front to avoid being surprised. Also when it was pulled onto the side, it was important to be attentive.”

“The team protected me perfectly all day. I knew there were still some fast riders in the bunch with Charlotte Kool and Elisa Balsamo, but the redrawn finish on VAM Mountain is still something different from a pure bunch sprint, so I was mainly keeping an eye on my own lead-out. Christine Majerus rolled out the runner for me and dropped me off in front of the cobbles, after which I went full on. I looked back and saw I had a gap right away, which was top. Since 2021, I am unbeaten in Ronde van Drenthe. That is special. So I wanted to celebrate that with a striking gesture of joy, a reference to the song ‘My guitar’, by Jan Smit,” Wiebes concluded.
