European champion Lorena Wiebes of SD Worx Protime took her 97th career win as she powered to her 4th victory of the season at Le Samyn. Overcoming a chaotic race with many attacks and unfortunately a few crashes, Wiebes stormed to the finish line ahead of Linda Zanetti (UNO X – Mobility) and an in form Lara Gillespie (UAE Team ADQ), claiming her first-ever Le Samyn victory. The Dutch have won more Le Samyn than any other nation, now on 8 wins.
Lorena Wiebes said after the finish: “It was pretty chaotic in the first part of the race. Sadly, we lost Elena Cecchini due to a crash, so we had to continue with one rider less. The girls positioned me perfectly towards the cobblestones, so I’m very grateful for the great teamwork today,” said Wiebes.
Heading into the final sprint, Wiebes showcased her power and positioning skills before launching her winning move in the closing meters.
“I really enjoyed today. It was a nice race, I had good legs and I felt ready for the sprint. It’s nice to finish it off this way and win my first Le Samyn. I had some bad memories from the last time I raced here so it’s nice to change this into good memories from now on. I enjoyed the race and the chaos. It makes you even more ready for the next races,” she added.
This win gave SD Worx Protime its 345th victory as a team.
