It was a successful week for Antri Christoforou, who won an incredible fourteenth and fifteenth Cypriot National Champion’s jerseys in the time trial and the road race. The 31-year-old native of Nicosia could now be considered the most successful cyclist from Cyprus of all time.
The 15th national jersey in Antri’s palmarés was achieved with a solo victory over four laps of a rolling 20-kilometre course in Nicosia.
“It’s an honor to hold these titles for so many years in a row,” she said. “This is a special win for me on Mother’s Day and the best way to celebrate it, because I love being a mum and a racer at the same time.”
Antri was keen to put on the best show for her friends and family on home roads.
“My husband was in the follow car. People from my first riding club, where I started cycling, were with my son Paul, my parents, my sisters, my nephews, all cheering me on the roadside from my village. It was special.”
The only Cypriot to compete in the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, Antri Christoforou has left an indelible mark on her sport in Cyprus. As a result, she is a huge source of inspiration and knowledge for young athletes in her country, a role she relishes.
“I really want to be able to help young girls survive the first years of racing. If I can help them or motivate them, I will be very happy.”
Christoforou will return to stage racing proudly wearing her national champion’s kit later this month at Ruta Del Sol and Tour Féminin International des Pyrénées.
