Borghini Takes Maglia Rosa In Stage One

The Giro d’Italia Women kicked off on Sunday July 7th with a victory and the first Maglia Rosa for one of the GC favourites, Elisa Longo Borghini. The Piedmontese rider got the better of the vice-world champion Grace Brown at the end of a tight duel with seconds between the two athletes at the first intermediate. The second part of the race was decisive for Longo Borghini who won by less than a second. The podium was completed by another Lidl – Trek rider, Brodie Chapman, while further back were Elisa Longo Borghini’s direct GC rivals – Lotte Kopecky, at 25″, Juliette Labous, at 29″, Gaia Realini, at 1’08”, Mavi Garcia, at 1’20”, and Neve Bradbury, at 1’47″.

2 – Grace Brown (FDJ-Suez) at 1″
3 – Brodie Champan (Lidl – Trek) at 13”

Contrary to the prize-giving ceremony, the leader of the best young rider classification was No. 33 Antonia NIEDERMAIER (CSR), who donned the Maglia Bianca during today’s second stage.
