How it happened

With Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx Protime) having won the opening two stages and picked up significant bonus seconds along the way, the fight was on in the final stage on the mall to take time and claim a podium position. At the first intermediate sprint, Letizia Paternoster (Liv AlUla Jayco) picked up maximum points, moving herself into second overall. Clara Copponi (Lidl Trek) and Marta Lach (Ceratizit WNT) also picked up time bonuses, but still sat outside the podium positions. Canyon//SRAM Racing did a lot of work on the front, but Soraya Paladin, sitting in 5th overall, didn’t pick up any bonus seconds. With only one more intermediate sprint and the bonuses across the finish line at the end of the stage, the GC positions were still all up for grabs.

Things were thrown further up in the air when two riders escaped. Kaja Rysz (Lifeplus Wahoo) and Scarlett Souren (Volkerwessels) grew their lead to 45 seconds ahead of the second intermediate sprint. Liv AlUla Jayco and Lidl Trek couldn’t let the pair absorb the bonus seconds, putting their teams to work to draw them back and doing so just before the sprint, only AG Insurance Soudal’s Ally Wollaston to beat them both across the line.

The bunch calmed again after the sprint, with SD Worx Protime coming through to control the front. Things unravelled for Liv AlUla Jayco who has looked so strong, with Letizia Paternoster needing a bike change. Taniel Campbell was able to bring her back to the bunch, but re-finding their position at the front with the pace on into the closing kilometres was a battle. Paternoster fought her way forward, onto the wheel of the SD Worx Protime lead out train.

Lidl-Trek and UAE Team ADQ looked in control while SD Worx Protime seemed a little lost, but Kopecky found her way up beside Lorena Wiebes and then unleashed her leadout, with only Wiebes and Kool able to come around her on the line.
